SENIOR CAPSTONE PROJECT
FAST FASHION
indesign | illustrator | Figma
How does the fast fashion industry affect the environment / climate change and what can we do to mitigate these effects?
For my senior capstone project, I wanted to learn about how the fast fashion industry affects the environment and the ways that both industry and consumers can take steps to mitigate these effects.
I care about this topic because I have been a victim of falling into fast fashion habits in the past. As someone who is now more concious of what they buy, I want to share the facts that can promote informed and responsible choices as consumers. I would also like to continue to learn about the industry and explore any misconceptions I have myself as someone who considers themself working to be a sustainable shopper.se effects?
The fast fashion industry has experienced exponential growth over the past few decades, transforming the way consumers approach clothing and style. This industry is characterized by its rapid production of inexpensive, trendy clothing. The environmental impact of fast fashion processes has become a source of concern as the industry has grown. Some of the biggest environmental concerns stem from the downfalls of the production process.
Fast fashion relies heavily on the use of synthetic materials and cheap labor to churn out large quantities of clothing quickly. This production of synthetic fabrics contributes to environmental degradation through the extraction of non-renewable resources and the release of harmful chemicals into the air and water. Quick trends and the low quality of the items themselves are both characteristic of the disposable nature of fast fashion which has led to a surge in textile waste. As consumers frequently throw away this outdated or worn-out clothing, landfills become flooded with synthetic materials that take a considerable amount of time to decompose. The exploitation of labor in the production of fast fashion is another critical concern.
TOPIC
SYNOPSIS
WHO IS AFFECTED
Fast fashion impacts industry by reshaping production cycles and supply chain dynamics to meet consumer demands for rapid turnover of trends at low costs. This model drives businesses to prioritize speed and efficiency, often leading to increased pressure on garment workers to produce large volumes of clothing under tight deadlines, resulting in labor rights violations and poor working conditions. Environmentally, fast fashion contributes to significant resource depletion, such as water and energy, during production and distribution processes. The disposal of cheap, frequently updated clothing adds to landfill waste and pollution, with textile dyeing and treatment processes also releasing harmful chemicals into waterways. For consumers, fast fashion offers affordability and accessibility but encourages overconsumption and a disposable fashion mindset, promoting impulse buying and dissatisfaction with wardrobes. These interconnected impacts underscore the need for systemic change in industry practices to ensure sustainability and ethical standards.
QUESTION
MINDMAPPING
Beggining to ask questions to inspire the direction of 2 different deliverables. The first will be a informational poster and the second will be an app both focusing on answering my original question and goals for the project.
PROTOTYPE 1
The objective of this prototype is to showcase important statistics about the negative implications of fast fashion.I want to target the people who have other options outside of fast fashion but still get sucked into the cycle of overbuying and then disposing. Showcasing important statistics about the negative implications of fast fashion in a digestible manner will allow me to shed light on the environmental impacts of fast fashion illiciting more consumer responsibility.
PROTOTYPE 2
In this prototype is to create an app that helps work to solve the problems of fast fashion and recirculate clothing leading to longer clothing lifecycles.
